Striker Arno Botha of Munster has not lost his hope of playing again for the Springboks.
Botha joined Munster from London Irish, joining former Bulls and Bok badistant coach Johann van Graan as well as junior teammate CJ Stander.
Botha won the last of his two Bok capes in 2013, when a knee injury slowed his progress, but declined to draw a line in his test career.
"The goal is to stay in Europe," Botha told the Irish media. "I know that if I'm good enough, I can still be part of the South African team and this team. But again, we must respect the remaining players. [in South Africa].
"It would be great to play for South Africa again, but for the moment, it's not something I think about everyday. Their season is also over and only resumes in June, and I know that Rbadie [Erasmus] works with a plan for the World Cup.
"Rbadie has worked with a lot of these guys in his career and he has a plan. If I can get him out of Europe, it's the perfect world. "
The 27-year-old has started the last two games of Pro14 and was impressed in the absence of Stander, but with the return of the Irish international, he knows he must work hard to keep his place.
"We played in 2011 at the Currie Cup and for U20s, 21, and won a trophy together," said Botha about his relationship with Stander. "We were not really good friends at the time, but we are now, so we talk and joke a lot about it.
"You have to respect the guys here, the loose attackers, especially Pete [O’Mahony] and CJ being British and Irish Lions players. It's not every guy who can say he is that. You have to respect that, then do what you can do to improve the team and make me more effective in making this starting team.
"Of course, the competition is difficult, but I do not think so," added Botha. "In Munster, we try to improve the team and if I can do it in any way I can, I'll do it that way."
