Emergency Landing at Shannon Airport for American Airlines Jet

A multi-agency contingency plan was put in place at Shannon Airport after an airline crew bound for the United States experienced emergency challenges over the Atlantic .

The American Airlines AA-63 flight crew reported Mayday at 1:15 pm this afternoon after reporting a problem with one of the aircraft's engines.

The Boeing 777-200, with 219 pbadengers and crew on board, was more than an hour northwest of Shannon at the time.

It was about three hours flying between Paris and Miami Florida at the time.

Fire and Rescue units in County Clare, located in the towns of Shannon and Ennis, stopped at Shannon to provide support to the fire and rescue service at the airport.

A number of resources from the National Ambulance Service and Garda units were also sent to the airport.

The flight landed at Shannon shortly after 14:30.

The airline confirmed that the flight had suffered a "mechanical" problem.

A spokesperson said: "Our maintenance team will evaluate the aircraft and we hope to get our customers to Miami as soon as possible."
