WhatsApp must present ads next year.
Facebook has confirmed that the messaging app will feature ads at its annual Dutch marketing summit.
It would work the same way as ads in Instagram Stories, with a "drag-and-drop" feature if users want to know more about them.
The technology journalist Jess Kelly says that he will publish the ads via the "my status" feature.
"It's about Facebook's attempt to make WhatsApp a viable business," Kelly said.
"Because at this time and time [WhatsApp] is totally free. "
Ms. Kelly said that in the status bar "advertisers will be able to take up space and send you ads".
Earlier this month, WhatsApp put in place a security patch after concerns were voiced. Hackers could inject monitoring software into phones via the call feature.
The application discovered a vulnerability that allowed attackers to install malicious code on iPhones and Android phones by calling a target device.
The company, which has about 1.5 billion users worldwide, was acquired by Facebook in 2014.
