A girl was rushed to hospital yesterday in critical condition after a boating incident in Limerick.
She allegedly belonged to a group of four girls traveling in a boat that was found overturned on a section of the Abbey River. The incident occurred shortly after 10am.
Members of the Limerick County Fire Department and Limerick County Fire Department discovered the boat overturned in the water and went to the aid of the girl.
The fire services team consisted of rapid water rescue personnel who had conducted a routine test on their specialized boat.
The injured girl was found stuck under the boat after sinking on the river.
Sources said that the girl's hair was "tangled" and "caught" by the rowing boat's stabilizers, used to anchor the oars.
The firemen "cut the girl's hair to free her" and immediately started CPR on her.
The emergency response also involved members of the Limerick Seaborne Search and Rescue Service, Gardai and the Shannon Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter.
The girl was taken to the slip-stall of the St. Michael's Rowing Club in Limerick City and taken by ambulance to the Limerick University Hospital where she was in critical condition, sources said. .
The regional communications center in Munster, which processes 999 calls for fire services in the region, was alerted at 10:15 am.
Four Limerick Fire Services units were deployed to the Athlunkard Boat Club, near Corbally, to deal with the incident.
It is thought that the other three girls rescued were not injured.
