A Japanese driver who acknowledged having reached nearly nine times the alcohol limit shortly before a flight from Heathrow Airport was sentenced.

The drunken first officer, 42-year-old Katsutoshi Jitsukawa, was arrested at the airport after failing a breath test just 50 minutes before Japan Airlines' (JAL) JL44 flight to Japan. Tokyo was supposed to take off with him in the badpit.

The flight was operated by a Boeing 777 that can accommodate up to 244 pbadengers.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said that Jitsukawa had pleaded guilty to exceeding the alcohol limit at Uxbridge's trial court on Thursday, Nov. 1.

He should be sentenced to Isleworth Crown Court Thursday afternoon.

The tests revealed that he had 189 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood in his system, almost nine times the limit of 20 mg set for a pilot.

The limit of drink driving in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is 80 mg.

JAL apologized and pledged to "take immediate action to prevent any future event," adding that "safety remains our top priority"
