A man arrested after the death of an innocent man and the fact that Garda was dragged on 500 meters by car in the tragic incident on the road to Monaghan

A man died tragically after his car was hit by a vehicle pursued by Gardai.

The incident occurred late Tuesday night around 11:30 pm, when a vehicle chased by Gardai collided with a Skoda Octavia, in Main Street, Castleblaney, in Monaghan County.

The occupant of the Skoda, an innocent man in his forties, was declared dead on the scene.

Minutes before the incident, Gardai had attempted to stop a silver Audi near Castleblaney Garda station.

A Garda who had attempted to stop the Audi had been dragged for about 500 meters before colliding with the Skoda Octavia.

In a statement, a Garda spokeswoman said: "Gardaí is investigating a fatal collision between two cars at Main Street, Castleblaney, Monaghan Co, on November 27, 2018 at 23:30.

"Shortly before the accident, Garda had attempted to stop an Audi A6 money near the station Castleblaney Garda.

"This car started and the Garda was dragged by the car for about 500m before hitting another car, a Skoda Octavia, on Main Street.

"The Garda, a man in his twenties, is being treated for injuries to the face, head and leg at the Notre Dame de Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

"The driver of the Skoda, a man in his forties, was declared dead on the scene.

"His body was transported to the hospital Notre-Dame de Lourdes de Drogheda where a post mortem examination will be carried out by the state pathologist.

"The driver of the silver Audi, a man in his forties, was arrested at the scene and detained at Carrickmacross Garda station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

"Main Street is closed for investigators, forensic investigators, and Garda crime scene investigators to conduct a review of the area." Local deviations are in place.

"All witnesses are kindly requested to contact the Carrickmacross Garda station at 042 9690190."
