A 46-year-old man from Limerick was sentenced to seven years in prison for repeatedly badually badaulting a girl and showing her badgraphic videos.
The man was convicted by a jury of six counts of badual badault and two counts of child badual exploitation between 2009 and 2012.
The girl was six to nine years old at the time.
At the time of the incident, the girl's parents had separated and the mother had started a relationship with the convict.
Madam Justice Tara Burns stated that the girl's mother had confidence in the man and in him around his daughter. The court learned that he had shown her how to use a computer and helped her with her homework.
But the judge said that when his mother was outside the house, the man perpetrated the most heinous badual badault against him in the sanctity of his family's home.
The girl testified on video but had to be questioned, said the judge.
She said that this was done in a very professional manner, respecting the age of the 16-year-old girl now, but that she still had to provide intimate and difficult proof.
The court heard testimony about the badual badault and the man who had forced the girl to watch a badgraphic video twice.
Justice Burns stated that the badual badault was extremely serious and involved a very young girl from the family home where she and her mother had trusted her.
She was in a vulnerable position because of her parents' separation.
The court learned that the man's relationship with the mother had ended in 2012, but the girl had not recounted what had happened before June 2013, by which time she had left a letter in his mother's room reporting some badaults.
The family made the decision not to report the badaults at that time. But two years later, the man contacted the girl via Instagram and the girl and her mother went to gardaí.
The man maintained his innocence during interviews with Garda, but he was convicted of eight counts by a jury last month.
The court learned that he had no previous convictions.
Judge Burns stated that the girl had handled the incidents with great courage and wished to look forward rather than back. However, she said that what had happened had a very significant effect on her.
She had trouble trusting people and the man had taken away her innocence.
She had also had to travel a very difficult road to carry the case and wait five and a half years for the case to come up.
But she said the girl was looking forward to a fresh start in 2019 and wished for the happiness that existed before the man came home to return to their lives.
The judge stated that the badaults were extremely serious, that there was a significant breach of trust, that the victim was very young and that the number of badaults had occurred over a period of three years.
She added that she had not taken into account the comments that had been made about the man helping the mother at home and helping the girl with her homework because that behavior l & # 39; He had led him to trust him.
The judge imposed sentences ranging from two years for charges of badual exploitation of children and seven years for the final badual badault.
The sentences will be executed simultaneously.
