A teenager launched a "totally unprovoked attack" against a Mexican national, causing the victim to lose half of his two teeth, a court said.
Clayton Brennan (19) from Dunawley Grove, Clondalkin, Dublin, pleaded guilty in Dublin Criminal Court for badault causing injury to Bachelors Walk, Dublin, on April 27, 2016.
Garda Eric Keogh told Garrett McCormack BL, at trial, that Mexican national Jose Mondragon was sitting on the sidewalk in front of the Arlington Hotel when Brennan was sitting next to him.
Mr. Mondragon tried to leave, but was surrounded by several young people. Brennan clasped her hands and struck Mr. Mondragon at the temple, knocking him to the ground and banging his mouth against a pot in a tree.
Brennan pushed him to the ground several times as he tried to get up. Mr. Mondragon escaped by jumping over a wall once Brennan stopped pushing him.
Speaking in court, Mr. Mondragon said that he had come to Ireland to learn English. Half of his two front teeth were lost during the badault and the total price to repair them is 4,205 €.
As Mr. Mondragon pbaded Brennan after giving his evidence in court, Brennan held out his hand and Mr. Mondragon shook it.
Brennan, who was 16 at the time, has already been sentenced eight times. This includes a felony badault causing serious harm to Lady Lane, Dublin, in May 2016, in which he "glazed an individual".
He is currently serving a five-year prison sentence, the last two years being suspended for violent disorder, arson and criminal damage. These relate to an incident that occurred on August 29, 2016 in which a unit of the Oberstown Children's Detention Campus was burned down and had to be demolished.
Brennan is expected to be released on January 30, 2020 and will remain under the supervision of the Probation Service for another 18 months.
Kevin White BL, in defense, stated that his client had been the victim of significant bullying throughout his schooling, including during incidents in which his shoes had been stolen and that he had been pushed in a bonfire.
Mr. White stated that his client had shown his guilt and remorse for committing this offense. He apologized on behalf of Brennan to Mr. Mondragon, saying that he "wanted to be tough in his eyes in front of his friends".
Judge Sinéad Ní Chúlacháin said that it was a "serious and totally unprovoked attack". She ordered a probation report and adjourned the case until 4 February 2019.
