It is understood that a guard was trying to stop the Audi near Castleblayney Garda station shortly before the collision.
It is thought that the car then started and that the Garda was dragged by the car for about 500 m before it crashed onto the Skoda.
The garda suffered injuries to the leg, head and face and was transported to the Notre Dame de Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, but was released earlier in the day.
