A young mother warned other parents after online crooks posted a photo of her son on social media, claiming he was missing.
Tricia Greene of Gaoth Dobhair in Donegal County was shocked when she saw a poster from her son Callan saying that he was missing.
The online call went viral and was shared more than 4,000 times on Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat by members of the public concerned.
The fake poster warned, "No sign of Caolan, if someone saw him or sees him, can you please get in touch!
"He is six years old, he has been missing since Friday, and he was last seen wearing the jacket depicting this picture, the top of Barcelona and the joggies in the Springburn Park area."
The campaign, which used a real image of Callan, was widely circulated in and around the Glasgow area of Scotland.
Mom Tricia was only informed about the fictional campaign when parents in Glasgow worried about Callan's death.
They contacted Tricia only to discover that Callan was safe and at home in Donegal.
Tricia then spent hours trying to understand the fake online campaign and asking people to delete the message and not share it anymore.
She said that she did not know why anyone would do that, but added that it was deliberate if we took a picture of Callan and appealed with her.
I just want other parents to know that it can happen. I do not know why someone would do such a thing, but it certainly scared me.
"I may never have heard of that, but the fact that some of my family lived in Glasgow and they alerted me.
"Fortunately, Callan has never missed and that's all that matters, but I would hate that no other parent would be scared to reading this article," she said.
