A GLOWING green fireball buzzing over Russia's high-tech "science city" in Siberia has sparked rumors that Vladimir Putin could develop space weapons.
The bright flash and streaked tail were seen by stunned motorists near the research town of Akademgorodok, near Novosibirsk, Russia.
Research institutes in the region are dubbed "the secret weapon" of Vladimir Putin in the high-tech arms race.
Koltsovo, home to a secret Vector institute, is only six miles away. It contains the world's deadliest diseases and viruses, including smallpox, Ebola and Marburg.
The images were captured on camera dashboard in the early morning darkness.
Some observers claimed that it was "a foreign attack" or an explosive meteor in the sky.
Russia also suggested trying "extremely sophisticated weapons" or "UFOs ready to invade Ukraine".
State-run Russian media admitted that astronomers were "somewhat confused" by sight.
Ilya Orlov, deputy director of the Novosibirsk Planetarium, described the phenomenon as "a beautiful phenomenon" without being able to determine the cause.
He said: "Most likely, it's a lightning bolt, that is, the fall of a bright meteor with a lightning bolt."
If that's the case, it's unusual, he says.
He said: "This is all the more surprising as there is no more meteorite rain going on.
"It can be the tail of a meteor shower or a solitary meteor.
"We must discover."
No trace of space rock was found on snow-covered ground, it was reported.
There were no reports of explosions either.
We do not think there were any rocket launches or missile tests when it appeared early Tuesday.
Akademgorodok was established by the Kremlin in 1957 to serve as a base for Soviet scientists in Siberia, far from the prying eyes of the West.
It now houses many Russian researchers and academics specializing in all branches of science, including military and space developments.

In recent years, Vector has been involved in efforts to find cures and antidotes for killers such as bubonic plague, anthrax, hepatitis B, HIV and cancer.
The research center holds one of only two sources of smallpox in the world – the other in the United States – under an international agreement.
This is not the first time that fears about Russia's secret weapon programs have been raised, with some claiming that it is developing robotic tanks and a new generation of stealth bombers to counter the West.
