Brad Sams, whom you may know from his articles on Thurrott.com, has published a new book on Microsoft Surface Materials. The publication describes how Surface has become a billion-dollar company for Microsoft, but Sams has also learned a lot about Microsoft's progress in its investigations.
The Surface appliance family has diversified over the years, with the launch by Microsoft of new accessories such as the Surface Dock, the Surface Dial or the brand new Surface Helmet. Sams' book revealed that a version of the Surface Studio for listening only could be available in 2020, but there is a lot of interesting information on the new Surface products currently being developed by Microsoft.
After all these years, Surface Pro remains the most popular form factor for consumers. In the book, Sams claims that the 2-in-1 tablet "will be heavily updated in the fourth quarter of 2019 with thinner glbades, new color options, USB-C and some other improvements."
The Laptop Surface debuted in 2017 and a new version was released this fall on the Surface Pro 6. Microsoft would have planned another update in the fourth quarter of 2019, but Sams said that Microsoft could switch to AMD chips for some models. "The company is still exploring chipset options and is waiting for silicon to materialize, but it's the order of the day to take a look at the red team for a possible upgrade of a laptop, "he explained.
In addition to the new Surface Pro and Surface laptop models, Sams also believes that a Surface-branded "Surface" device could be on the market in the spring of next year. There are not many details on this new accessory at the moment, except that it may require a smartphone and a "help with text input and navigation".
As for the elephant in the room, yes, the foldable mobile device "Andromeda" Microsoft is not dead yet, but the project is literally growing. Sams made a comparison with Intel's Tiger Rapids two-screen laptop prototype, which is not really something you can put in your pocket. "This device will be available as soon as it is ready and it is justified, but the company considers it a visionary device and it is currently planned for a T4 version," said Sams about Andromeda.
We'll see what happens, but Microsoft has changed its plans several times over the years, as we've seen with the cancellation of Surface Mini. In just six years, Microsoft has managed to create a very healthy company and a fairly prestigious brand with Surface, and the company might not want to tarnish it with a device devoid of all the popular applications already available on iOS and Android.
