CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) – Health Officials in South Texas say that a person has died after having been infected with Wade bacteria fishing in the Gulf of Mexico.
Health officials said on Tuesday that the person was hospitalized with severe leg pain after getting into the water with tears of skin. The measures taken to combat the infection included amputation.
The Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District says that vibrio bacteria naturally inhabit the coastal waters where oysters live. The bacteria can enter the body through an open wound or by eating raw or undercooked shellfish.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, vibriosis causes about 80,000 diseases and 100 deaths each year in the United States
. Emilie Prot with the health department of the Texas State Department says that there is a greater amount of bacteria present in the summer.
Last summer, a Texas woman died after eating flesh-eating bacteria.
