CORPUS CHRISTI, TX (RNN) – An unidentified person died of a flesh-eating bacterial infection, health officials reported on Tuesday

.

The person arrived at the hospital with the clbadic signs of a bacterial infection at one of his legs, including severe leg pain.

Despite life-saving measures, including the amputation of the affected leg, health care professionals did save the patient's life, and the person died within 24 to 36 hours of being hospitalized.

Vibrio is naturally present in brackish water with oysters and is most abundant between May and October, when the water is warmer.

The bacteria can also be ingested, causing watery diarrhea, often accompanied by abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever and chills, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The weakened immune system is more vulnerable to severe complications of vibrio infections

According to the CDC, populations at risk for serious complications of the vibrio include:

• people with liver disease, d Cancer, diabetes, HIV or thalbademia; who receive immunosuppressive therapy for the treatment of the disease;
• those who take drugs to lower levels of stomach acid and people
• and those who have undergone recent surgery of the stomach

With vibriosis, 100 people die from the Infection in the United States, says the CDC.
