A co-pilot was jailed for 10 months after attempting to fly an airplane while he was nine times the legal limit of alcohol.
Katsutoshi Jitsukawa was arrested at Heathrow Airport on October 28 after attempting to enter the badpit of a Japan Airlines flight as a first officer.
The security personnel intervened after realizing that he was not fit to steal, the agents having noted his "glbady eyes" and caught a strong smell of alcohol.
One officer stated that the co-pilot had "difficulty standing straight".
A colleague challenged him and said that he had been drinking whiskey the previous night but that he had already pbaded a breathalyzer test.
He was later found in the aircraft toilets, gargled with a mouthwash.
Jitsukawa, 42, contained no less than 189 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, which exceeds the limit of 20 mg per 100 ml of blood.
His preliminary breathalyzer revealed that he was 10 times above the limit, with 93 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of breath. The legal limit is 9 mg.
The plane, which was due to leave at 18:50, left after a delay of 69 minutes.
He pleaded guilty to the Uxbridge Court of First Instance on November 1 and was sentenced Thursday at Isleworth Crown Court.
He also lost his job.
Jitsukawa's lawyers stated that he was the only badistant to three young children and that he dreamed of becoming a pilot from an early age, but that the reality of long-haul flights had affected him .
Bill Emlyn Jones added, "He said that he had become unhappy, that he was suffering from insomnia, that he was beginning to feel depressed." It would appear that he had used alcohol to self-treat. "
Judge Phillip Matthews said: "You are an experienced pilot, but you have obviously been drinking for a long time, until shortly before you arrive on the plane.
"The most important thing is the safety of everyone on this very long-haul flight, potentially 12 hours or more, and their safety has been jeopardized by your drunkenness and drunkenness.
"The prospect of you taking control of this plane is too appalling to be considered, and the potential consequences for those on board were catastrophic."
Jitsukawa appeared by videoconference from Wandsworth Prison. It does not have a fixed address in the UK.
Japan Airlines Deputy General Manager Yasuhiro Kikuchi said: "As an organization, we will work together to prevent this from happening again."
