Adam Levine gives a cryptic answer to the Super Bowl performance question

Maroon 5's Adam Levine gave an enigmatic answer when asked to perform at the Super Bowl as the group asked the group to retire.

Rihanna reportedly refused a half-time show at the show, which is traditionally one of the biggest events of pop culture of the year in the United States, but is currently subject to controversy because of the conflict between the NFL and Colin Kaepernick.

Kaepernick, a former quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, began to kneel while the national anthem was played before games, in protest of police brutality against people of color.

The decision – which quickly inspired other players to do the same – sparked heated controversy, with President Donald Trump among those demanding that he defend The Star-Spangled Banner.

After it became apparent that Maroon 5 was in the running for next year's Super Bowl half-time, fans started an online petition demanding that they retire. It has so far attracted 64,000 signatures.

But Levine refused to answer questions directly about it and, in an interview with Variety magazine, he said, "I still make a lot of things."

Levine is yet to confirm or deny that the band will appear and during an appearance on Ellen DeGeneres' chat-show this month remained shy about the possibility.

He said, "It's definitely a rumor. And the rumor is a rumor that everyone seems to be talking about. It's the Super Bowl. It's a big event and there will be a group – or an artist – at half-time.

"And it's going to be great no matter who it is. Whoever will have the chance to get this job will probably crush it. Whoever does it is probably both nervous and excited.

"All this is speculative because I do not know who I am talking about."

In addition to what Rihanna would have said no, Jay-Z said in one of his songs that he did not want to play either.

Actress Amy Schumer said she would boycott the NFL by refusing to take part in the Super Bowl's publicity.

Kaepernick, who has been without a team since the beginning of the controversy, is currently battling a legal battle against the NFL, claiming that the league has been heard in concert with the teams to make sure no one sign.
