Barr clinches first prize at an end-of-season athletics event

Thomas Barr has been named Athlete of the Year at the National Athletics Awards of Irish Life Health.

The European 400m bronze medalist received the award at a ceremony at the Crowne Plaza Blanchardstown.

His podium in Berlin during the summer was the culmination of an excellent year for Irish athletics.

It also helped Barr, of Waterford's Ferrybank, win Athletics Athlete of the Year, blocking high-profile opposition in Phil Healy (Bandon) for his 200m performances at Cork City Sports, the European finalist Leon Reid (Menapians) Ciara Mageean (UCD), recently crowned national cross-country champion

Sommer Lecky has been named Junior Athlete of the Year; it soared to win a sensational silver medal in the high jump with a 1.90m under 20 national record at the U20 World Athletics Championships. 39, IAAF in Finland.

The relay team of Molly Scott, Gina Akpe-Moses, Ciara Neville, Patience Jumbo-Gula and Rhasidat Adeleke were named Team of the Year for their silver medal at the same championships.

Mary Purcell was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2018. She was the dominant figure of female athletics in Ireland throughout the 1970s.

Frank Greally, long-time editor of Irish Runner magazine and tireless advocate of Irish athletics, has received the Special Recognition Award for 2018.
