On the same day that the new Mac mini and MacBook Air were unveiled last month, Blackmagic Design announced a new eGPU Pro to be released in November. Today, however, Apple has updated its web page for the product to indicate that its release has been postponed until December.

The Blackmagic eGPU Pro incorporates the powerful Radeon RX Vega 64, offering a much faster graphics processor than its non-pro predecessor. There is also DisplayPort connectivity.

Here are the complete specifications:

  • Compatible with any Mac compatible Thunderbolt 3
  • Radeon RX Vega 56 graphics processor with 8 GB of HBM2 memory
  • Two Thunderbolt 3 ports
  • Four USB ports 3
  • HDMI 2.0 port
  • DisplayPort Port 1.4
  • Power delivered 85W
  • Height: 11.59 inches (29.44 cm)
  • Length: 6.96 inches (17.68 cm)
  • Width: 6.96 inches (17.68 cm)
  • Weight: 4.5 kg

Of course, Apple's update of Apple's Blackmagic eGPU Pro web page in December provides no specific information on the date of publication. This could mean December 1st, but it is more likely that we will not see a release later this month. Before today, the web page indicated an exit in November.

Our own Jeff Benjamin looked at the original Blackmagic eGPU and noted that although it offered impressive build quality, its performance was not quite up to par. The new eGPU Pro should help remedy this with its improved Radeon RX Vega 56. Here's how Apple describes the product, comparing it to the iMac Pro:

Get workstation-level graphics performance on any Thunderbolt-compatible Mac 3. Blackmagic Design adds the new Blackmagic eGPU Pro, featuring a Radeon RX Vega 56 graphics processor and 8GB of HBM2 memory. You'll be able to run extremely graphically intensive workloads that were previously only possible on iMac Pro.

Once available, the Blackmagic eGPU Pro will cost $ 1,199. Are you planning to take one? Let us know in the comments and look at our review of the non-Pro model below.
