Stephen Hillenburg, the American cartoonist who created the children's television series SpongeBob SquarePants, pbaded away at 57.
Nickelodeon confirmed the sad news in a tweet tonight, saying to his supporters: "We are sad to share the news of the death of Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of SpongeBob SquarePants.
"Today we are observing a moment of silence to pay tribute to his life and work."
Stephen has been working on SpongeBob since 1999 and still works to this day.
