Cork authors win Irish Book of the Year award

CORK writers Mary White and William Murray were among the winners of the 2018 An Post Irish Book Awards last night.

Sally Rooney, Emilie Pine, Emer McLysaght, Sarah Breen, Lynn Ruane and Liz Nugent were honored at last night's awards awards, which were voted on by the public.

More than 100,000 votes were cast by book lovers in over a dozen categories, an increase of 96% over the previous year.

The awards have rewarded books in a wide range of categories.

Among the winners, Sally Rooney, of "Normal People", won the novel title of the year; "Skin Deep" by Liz Nugent, who won the fictional fiction book of the year; and Peter Donnelly, who won the Book of the Year (Junior) for "The President's Cat."

The winner in the Bord Gáis Energy Sports Book of the Year category is Cora Staunton's "Game Changer" with Mary White. Mary is a former sports journalist and editor-in-chief of the Evening Echo.

William Murray, meanwhile, won the EUROSPAR cookbook of the year for 'Curabinny Cookbook', written with his partner James Kavanagh. William developed his love of food growing up in Currabinny and studied at the Ballymaloe Cookery School.

A number of other writers from Cork were competing at last night's prices.

Writer Louise O'Neill of West Cork – a former Laureate of the Year Book Award – was vying for the yearbook for teens / young adults in "The Surface Breaks ", a feminist reinterpretation of Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid. & # 39 ;. The prize was awarded to Brian Conoghan for "The Weight of a Thousand Feathers".

Radio and television presenter Matt Cooper was ready for his book on Ryanair chef Michael O'Leary, but he escaped Senator Lynne Ruane in the documentary category.

Dervla McTiernan, Danny Denton, Graham Norton, Caroline O'Donoghue and Alan Titley were also in the running for the awards. Starting today, the public can vote for the entire An Post Book of the Year by visiting www.irishbookawards.irish.
