Donegal TD Charlie McConalogue has welcomed the launch of a new Lyme Resource Center at Mater Hospital in Dublin.
The center is privately funded and is led by Dr. Jack Lambert, consultant on infectious diseases.
McConalogue said: "The launch of this center is a major step forward for people already diagnosed with Lyme disease and for those who are worried about having this debilitating disease.
"The Lyme support groups have been trying to raise awareness for a while now and hope that this new center will serve as a catalyst for a more targeted information campaign.
"Dr. Lambert led the way in helping people with Lyme. His proactive and constructive approach to the disease has alleviated the anxiety and frustration of many people with debilitating symptoms without knowing the cause. "
He added: "The broader medical community needs to make concerted efforts to recognize this disease, particularly with regard to clinical diagnosis and treatment plans.
"I am disappointed that the government and HSE continue to set aside this disease, which affects hundreds of people across the country.
"This venture is privately funded, and while I welcome its creation, I would like the minister to recognize the seriousness of this problem."
"I recently met with members of the support group for Donegal Lyme Disease and Co-infections in Dublin and pledged to lobby the government for it to put in place a program of awareness and treatment.
"My colleagues from the Oireachtas Lyme Disease Action Group and I will continue to work together to advance this important issue," said Vice-President McConalogue.
