Dramatic video surveillance footage appeared during an incident at Co Monaghan last night, during which a man was killed and a guard injured.
The incident occurred around 11:30 pm last night in Castleblayney, and it looks like it started when a man left the local Garda station and tried to get away with a silver Audi A6.
It is understood that a guard attempted to arrest the man, but the driver took the road and dragged him about 500 meters along the road before hitting another car parked in the main street from Castleblayney.
Stephen Marron, 47, who was sitting in the parked Skoda car was declared dead at the scene as a result of the collision.
Mr. Brown, from Castleblayney, was sitting in the driver's seat of the parked car.
Garda Michael Devlin (31), who is stationed at Monaghan Garda station, was injured in the face, head and legs.
He was treated at the Notre-Dame de Lourdes hospital in Drogheda, but has since been released.
The driver of the Audi A6 was arrested at the scene and is currently at the Carrickmacross Garda station.
Gardai called a woman to contact them about the incident last night.
A spokeswoman for Garda said that she was a member of the public and that she had been the first person to attend the incident. She also helped Garda, injured.
At the same time, tributes were paid to Mr. Marron, who was "a devoted husband and father" and served as a sacristan badistant in the parish of Muckno.
In a statement, a spokesman for the parish said the community was upset and deeply saddened by his pbading.
Canon Shane McCaughey, priest of Muckno Parish, said: "Stephen was the man to whom everyone belonged in the community of Muckno Parish.
"He was a disciple of Jesus Christ who asked his disciples to love God and to love his neighbor.
"Stephen has testified to his faith by the generosity and kindness he showed to all those who needed it the most.
"We all in the parish pray that Stephen is now in the eternal peace of Jesus Christ, the risen Lord, and we pray for his wife, their children, his parents and his sisters and his many friends; Lord can accompany them right now. "
The main street of Castleblayney remains closed because the guards await the arrival of the investigators.
The silver Audi A6, driven by the man currently in custody, suffered significant damage to the front of the vehicle.
The Skoda car, in which the deceased was sitting, also remains on the scene.
Damage may be observed on the sides and at the rear of the vehicle while a tent has been used to cover part of the vehicle.
The deceased, Mr. Marron, lived in Castleblayney, while the person arrested as part of the investigation reportedly lived in Northern Ireland.
The scene of the accident is located about 500 meters from Castleblayney Garda station, where the incident began.
Local deviations are in place.
In a statement issued this afternoon, Mr. Gardaí said that the case had been referred to the Garda Siochana Ombudsmen's Committee.
The mediator's commission of the Garda Siochana confirmed that she would conduct a review of the fatal incident.
GSOC investigators arrived at the scene this morning to conduct their own investigations at the scene of the accident.
It is understood that they will focus on the interaction between the driver of the Audi vehicle and that of the garda that led to the tragic accident.
In a statement, the Garda mediator said: "The GSOC was seized by the Garda Síochána, pursuant to Article 102 of the Garda Síochána Act 2005, following an incident during the night in Castleblayney, Monaghan County.
"A man was fatally injured by a vehicle driven by a member of the public following a conversation with a Garda member in the Garda station.
"The referral was made pursuant to Article 102 of the 2005 Law on the Garda Síochána, which provides for an independent investigation into any case that appears to indicate that the conduct of a member of the Garda Síochána could have cause death or serious harm to a person.
"The GSOC has deployed a team of investigators to the scene and the incident review is continuing."
