Hot drinks more than double the risk of throat cancer, experts warn.
New discoveries show that hot water damages the lining of the mouth, throat and esophagus.
According to a new study, adding cold milk to tea and coffee, or waiting for hot drinks to cool, could protect against cancer of the esophagus.
Research has shown that regular ingestion of hot drinks almost doubles the risk of developing esophageal disease, and the researchers advised people to let the drinks cool down.
The study, published in the International Journal of Cancer, examined the drinking patterns of 50,045 people aged 40 to 75 years in northeastern Iran.
During a follow-up period from 2004 to 2017, 317 new cases of oesophageal cancer were identified.
Dr. Farhad Islami, lead author of the American Cancer Society, said, "Many people like to drink tea, coffee or other hot drinks.
"However, according to our report, drinking hot tea can increase the risk of cancer of the esophagus. It is therefore advisable to wait for hot drinks to cool before drinking.
"As long as you let your tea cool a bit before you drink it or add cold milk, it's unlikely you'll increase your risk of cancer."
Experts warned that the consumption of hot drinks could increase up to 90% the risk of esophageal cancer.
In 2016, the International Agency for Research on Cancer clbadified the consumption of very hot beverages above 65 ° C as probable carcinogens.
They said it was the temperature rather than the type of drink badociated with cancer.
