There are many reasons to avoid replying to a message on Facebook.

Maybe you are trying to block bad memories, avoid a sensitive topic or that you simply hate the sender.

Whatever the reason, having old buried messages widen like new ones is not ideal.

"My Facebook bug and continues to display very old chat windows that are so many messages that I have not answered and that make me feel very attacked," said a worried user on Facebook.

Facebook users took Twitter to complain about the bug

Another explained: "Does Facebook evoke the old cats of people a few years ago?"

"I continue to respond accidentally to messages that are several years old in discussions with people who have opened randomly.

"I've also received a random message from someone who responded a year ago, so I do not think I'm alone."

And one user has described it as being "haunted … like the ghost of his friend's past".

Facebook admitted that the problem was real, but said it was now resolved.

The social network has attributed the bug to issues related to recent software updates.

In a statement, a Facebook spokesman said: "Earlier in the day, some people may have seen Facebook send back old messages.

"The problem, caused by the software updates, has been fully resolved.

"We are sorry for any inconvenience."

Google recently added features similar to Gmail, calling "nudging".

If you or a recipient has included a question in a thread and no one has answered, this will make both of you respond a few days later.

But many users found this annoying – so we created a simple guide to disable Gmail reminders.
