Gardaí released four men who had been arrested as part of an attack against a football referee at Co Offaly earlier this month.

Two men in their twenties, a teenager and a man in his forties, were arrested yesterday morning.

The four were questioned about the alleged badbadination of a referee during a match at Horseleap on the border of Offaly Westmeath on Sunday, November 11th.

Arbitrator Daniel Sweeney, 40, was hospitalized as a result of this incident. He had to undergo surgery for injuries including a fractured jaw.

The four men were arrested at the Mullingar, Tullamore and Birr Garda stations.

All four were released earlier in the morning and Mr Gardaí said that files were being prepared for the DPP.

Last week, the Combined County Football League banned three players from the town of Mullingar and a spectator of any football activity for 40 years.
