Gavin & Stacey return to the screens for an hour-long Christmas special

The sitcom Gavin & Stacey is back for a special Christmas promotion.

The show, starring Mathew Horne and Joanna Page and created by Ruth Jones and James Corden, will be back on BBC One.

Writers Jones and Corden revealed that they had secretly planned to bring back the much-loved sitcom.

"Over the last 10 years, we've talked a lot about Gavin and Stacey – where they could be today and what their life might look like.

"So, secretly, we took the plunge and wrote this special one hour," they said.

"We enjoyed revisiting Barry and Esbad again, and bringing the characters together was a joy.

"We are very pleased to have the chance to work once again with our team and our fabulous actors and to give the fans of the show a festive treat this Christmas. Thanks to the BBC for helping to make this possible. "

Corden and Jones will resume their roles as Smithy and Nessa alongside other actors – Rob Brydon, Larry Lamb, Melanie Walters and Alison Steadman.

Gavin & Stacey has broadcast more than three series, as well as a special Christmas broadcast, from 2007 to 2010 on the BBC.

It told the story of Gavin (Horne), Esbad, and Stacey (Page), from Barry to Wales, fell in love and married after being talked on the phone every day at work .

The 2010 New Year finale was watched by more than 10.2 million viewers.

Charlotte Moore, director of content for the BBC, said, "Everyone at the BBC is extremely excited to welcome Gavin and Stacey to the BBC One this Christmas.

"We are excited to see what has happened to everyone over the past nine years and what will be the next step for one of the country's favorite comedy families."

The sitcom was a decisive success for BBC Three and was eventually transferred to BBC One.

Corden then enjoyed success in the United States as the host of The Late Late Show, best known for his Carpool Karaoke segment.
