Former Leeds United player, Noel Whelan, is pleased that Marcelo Bielsa deploys Kalvin Phillips as a center back.

With his defensive resources stretched to the limit, Bilesa chose to put the defensive midfielder Phillips in the background of Leeds' 1-0 win over Reading at Elland Road on Tuesday night.

Whelan was quite happy with what he saw from Phillips and thinks that the defensive midfielder already has the necessary qualities to face the central defender.

And the former Leeds striker stressed that Bielsa would not have made that change if he did not have complete confidence, Phillips could do the job.

"I had no problem with him playing center-half "Whelan said on BBC Radio Leeds.

"All this season, we have seen that this deeper role really suits him.

"He likes tackles, he likes challenges, he knows how to defend himself, he can anticipate the game and it shows why he is there because the manager trusts him to do a job.", he added.

Bielsa has made Phillips a key player on his Leeds team this season and everyone will be wondering if the midfielder should be used to the back again this weekend against rival Yorkshire Sheffield United.

Leeds was deprived of Pontus Jansson for visiting Reading, while Gaetano Berardi and Luke Ayling are long-term defensive absentees.
