Starting at 3pm this afternoon, Irish children's pbadports can be renewed online and Irish pbadport cards will be available for children for the first time.
Tánaiste and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Simon Coveney, have announced the extension of the online pbadport renewal service of Ireland.
It enables the online renewal of Irish children's pbadports, introduces a new children's pbadport card and enables renewals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from around the world.
Online renewal fees are also reduced to € 75 for online pbadport book renewals, compared to € 80 plus postage (€ 9.50) for a traditional Express Pbad renewal.
Children's pbadport applications can be made with a digital photo (not a selfie – see guidelines below), an email address and a credit / debit card. dfa.ie/pbadportonline.
However, first applications can not be processed online, and the guardian identity and consent forms must be printed with the signatures attested at renewal.
Ireland's online pbadport application service was launched in March 2017 as part of an ongoing 18.6 million euro upgrading of the Irish pbadport service.
Since 2015, the program has been providing pbadport cards, online application tracking, a Travelwise application and enhanced security features, among other services.
Ireland continues to process a record number of pbadport applications, with 786,822 applications in 2017 alone, and this is expected to increase this year.
Renewal via traditional routes such as Pbadport Express can take 15 business days and the system has experienced delays at peak times, but online applications are generally faster.
Customers can expect a turnaround time of 8 to 10 days, says the pbadport service, but 50% of renewals are returned within five days and 12% within one business day.
FAQ: How to apply for an Irish pbadport online
How much does it cost?
A standard pbadport application costs € 75 on the new online system, while a child pbadport book costs € 20.
This compares to a fee of € 80 for the An Post Pbadport Express, with an application fee of € 9.50.
A pbadport card costs 35 €, but you can save money if you make a simultaneous request for both at the same time – for a group rate of 105 €.
What do I need to apply?
You will need a digital photo, an email address and a credit / debit card to apply online. Have these documents handy when you start the process at the dfa.ie/pbadportonline address.
Is it available for everyone?
All pbadports can now be renewed online, but new applicants must continue to use the current system – via La Poste's pbadport offices or Express Pbadport.
How can I get a child's pbadport card?
Pbadport cards for children can only be requested with the renewal of the pbadport book. Unlike pbadports, they can not be requested alone. Prices are grouped (see above).
What are the directions of the photo?
You can not submit selfies or photos taken with a webcam, although applicants may ask another person to take their picture using a smartphone or a digital camera (be careful not to use the zoom function).
You can also use one of the Photo-Me digital kiosks located throughout the country (pbadportphoto.ie), or have it taken by a photographer or a pharmacy.

What about consent for children?
In order for the pbadport service to continue to verify the child's identity and receive the consent of guardians via the online child pbadport renewal service, a pbadport consent and identity form for child will be generated for printing and verification at the end of the online process.
According to the Pbadport Service, this form can be printed at home, but your signature can be seen by different people, including gardaí, doctors or school secretaries.
How long does the process take?
According to the DFA website, the application process should take "about 10 to 15 minutes", provided your digital photos are ready for use.
Payments can be made by credit or debit card and pbadports will be issued by express mail. You can expect your request to be processed within a target processing time of ten business days, plus postage.
And what if I need an urgent renewal?
If your pbadport has expired and a trip is imminent, you can make an emergency appointment at the pbadport office in Dublin or Cork, where a 3 to 10 day delay costs 150 € (Pbadport Appointment.ie; 01 671-1633).
The Dublin office also offers a Rapid Renewal service, with a three-day deadline by appointment only (150 €, proof of travel required).
In the event of death or serious illness of a family member, or in the case of urgent medical treatment of the applicant, the pbadport service may deliver the document within one day.

Should application forms be verified?
Renewal applications for children involve the printing and testimony of identity and consent forms, but not adult online renewals. Full instructions can be found on the DFA website here.
Other changes?
Yes. Last year, pbadports are valid for five years for all children aged 18 and under. The three-year old pbadport is no longer available and all children's pbadports will now cost € 20.
