Facebook said it paid an effective tax rate of 15.5% in Ireland last year.

The Irish branch of social media reported a profit of 251.8 million euros before taxes last year, against 174.3 million euros the previous year.

A total amount of € 38.3 million of taxes was paid, which includes the standard corporate tax, as well as the effect of non-deductible expenses and taxed income at a higher rate.

The turnover amounted to 18.7 billion euros, an increase of almost 50%. The company gets its money from selling online advertising.

"As the headquarters of our international headquarters, Ireland is an important part of Facebook's history and our continued growth in 2017 has demonstrated," said Facebook's boss Ireland, Gareth. Lambe.

"By the end of the year, we will directly employ nearly 2,000 people at four locations in Ireland, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Oculus.

"We have recently announced the expansion of our investment in Ireland with the acquisition of the Bank Center campus in Ballsbridge. This significant investment in a 14-acre campus that can accommodate thousands of additional people is a testament to our commitment to Ireland, to growing our business here and to continuing to contribute to the economy.
