Mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus were detected in Hartford

HARTFORD, CT – State authorities announced that mosquitoes trapped at Keney Park in Hartford were tested positive for West Nile virus on July 24th.

Prevention of mosquito bites:

• Make sure the mosquito nets are tight fitting and in good condition.
• Wear shoes, socks, long pants and a shirt long-sleeved when you're out for long periods, or when mosquitoes are the most active. Clothing should be light in color and made from tight woven materials that keep mosquitoes away from the skin.
• Use a mosquito net when sleeping in an unshielded structure and to protect small babies on the outside.
• Use an insect repellent, as directed, when it is necessary to be outdoors.

Prevention of Mosquitoes at Home:

• Eliminate containers containing water such as ceramic pots, used tires and swings.
• Drill holes in the bottom of containers such as those used for recycling.
• Clean clogged gutters.
• Flip over objects that may retain water when they are not used such as wading pools and wheelbarrows.
• Change the water in the baths of birds on a weekly basis.
• Use landscaping techniques to eliminate areas where water can accumulate on your property.
