New Zealand media respond to Joe Schmidt's announcement in Ireland

The news that Joe Schmidt is going leaves Ireland at the end of Rugby World Cup 2019 is not too shocking here. While Irish fans are extremely disappointed, he leaves – most have seen us signs that the New Zealander was ready to finish.

But the big surprise here and back in New Zealand is the fact that he will move away completely from training. Nobody can really say that they saw that coming. Schmidt was recently named the best coach in the world – and could very well have any job that he wants. Even the most popular ticket to world rugby – being coach of the All Blacks.

This will not happen though – at least not for a moment. He has moved away from the station to replace Steve Hansen next year and the Kiwis are shocked to say the least. In the New Zealand Herald this morning, a headline said: "All Blacks Bomb – Irish coach Joe Schmidt makes a shock announcement."

"Joe Schmidt will not be in the ring as the next All Blacks head coach." the article read

"In a surprise announcement, Schmidt revealed that he was going to finish his training after the Rugby World Cup in Japan next year"

"While many were expecting him to leave his position as head coach of Ireland, his decision to withdraw completely from the training was a major surprise, many of them have named Schmidt as the next All Blacks coach.

"The Kiwi-born coach led Ireland last week to a 16-9 victory over the All Blacks, and if All Blacks coach Steve Hansen was to retire after the World Cup, Schmidt was widely referred to as a favorite. "

Elsewhere, Stuff.co.nz went with the title, "Joe Schmidt will leave his coaching post after the Rugby World Cup".

"A few hours after being named World Rugby head coach, the New Zealander seems to have ruled out any possibility of seeing him coach the All Blacks." the article read

"Schmidt has been touted as a future coach of the All Blacks, but he seems to have ruled out with his statement."

Will Schmidt stay "retired" for a long time? In a way, we doubt it. It is still possible that he finishes as coach of the All Blacks. But he will certainly not replace Steve Hansen.
