No snow in Lapland: an Irish girl "sold short" after spending € 6.5k on a trip to see Santa Claus

Irish winter tourists visiting Lapland are disappointed by the lack of snow that has fallen as the holiday season approaches.

Although many Irish families are expected to visit Santa's home in Finland, it is understood that the snow falls later than normal this year.

Mary Daniels is one of those people who has to spend a few days in what is usually a winter wonderland.

Speaking to Joe Duffy on Liveline, Mary said that she had spent 6,500 euros for 36 hours in Lapland, which included a sleigh ride and husky ride.

She said: "There is no snow in Lapland.

"I went back to the travel agency and said that they would give me another date or refund me because … a company in Ireland canceled the first week of December in Lapland … and the answer was no. "

Mary is scheduled to leave on Monday, December 3, and said that when she booked the first week of the month, she was guaranteed snow.

"I said 'there will definitely be snow there' – and they said that there was still snow there.

"I understand that they can not control the weather … but that's why you book in Lapland, the snow.

"They have a snow machine but these are unique holidays in life, that 's a lot of money.

She continued: "I know that they can not control the weather, but if I was in Lapland and that the snow was disappearing and everything was set up, I would understand, but they would send us knowingly snow.

"And it's not just for kids."

Mary said that she had bought the trip for her grandchildren as a Christmas present and that they were going to see Santy.

She feels sold out and will go anyway, otherwise she will lose her money anyway.

She feels that "the gloss has disappeared".

Mary and her traveling companions could be comforted by the fact that some people in Lapland are posting photos of the area where the snow has begun to fall.

Sorry kids, we canceled the trip to #Lapland because the media told us that there was no snow. The next day, that. At least @TUIUK no need to explain or justify that one. pic.twitter.com/XWhifzfqzQ
