The news has not been formalized yet, but the opinion is that the flyweight division of the UFC is about to end.
Rumors have been circulating for several weeks about the closure of the 125-pound division. This happened just after Demetrious "Mighty Mouse", the UFC flyweight champion, was traded to the ONE Championship. Current division champion Henry Cejudo will defend his title against bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw at UFC 233.
Several senior flyers were released from their contracts with UFC, and their directors were informed that the promotion was considering closing the division. Recently, UFC President Dana White spoke about the UFC Uniltered podcast to address the issue. White noted that the division had never really taken off. He also mentioned that no one seemed really concerned about it, either (via MMA News):
"The flyweight division has just never taken off," White said. "It has never attracted attention even with a dominant champion like Demetrious [Johnson]it has never worked. People did not care.
"I fought for a long time, I tried to keep it alive and, of course, it continues. We still have fights in this division. We will see what the future holds for us. "
Cejudo will defend the flyweight title against Dillashaw in the main event of UFC 233 at pay-per-view (PPV). The show will air on January 26 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. This could be the last fight for the UFC flyweight title in history.
