Ronan O'Gara has expressed interest in being part of the Irish hinterland when Andy Farrell succeeds Joe Schmidt at the end of next year.

The former half-half of Ireland and Munster is currently working as coach of the Canterbury Crusaders in New Zealand, but told Virgin Media on Wednesday that he would be open to a return to Ireland when Farrell would regain control after the 2019 World Cup.

Farrell, a defense specialist, should call on an attacking coach. Stuart Lancaster, of Leinster, was badociated with the role played by O'Gara.

"I would be in touch with some guys from IRFU, I played all my rugby here," O'Gara said in an interview with Virgin Media.

"I try to do my best and create my own career as a coach. It changes very quickly. A phone call can change everything. At the moment I am in New Zealand, I am extremely happy, under contract with the Crusaders. I will be for a moment. Something like that is your home country, you want it (you want to do it) at some point.

"It's important to choose your time. An opening does not mean anything, you have to know how to improve it and if you can improve it. Who knows, depending on what role is available. You can see that the show here is very loud. One day, hopefully, that will happen.
