Scientists warned that online videos providing medical information about prostate cancer presented a potential risk to the health of patients.

Many people are turning to the Internet for more details on health issues, YouTube being a popular destination.

However, research has shown that 77% of the 150 most viewed videos on the site regarding the disease contained factual errors or biased content, in the video or in their comments. The study, conducted by the School of Medicine at New York University and its Perlmutter Cancer Center, found that even though three-quarters of the videos described the benefits of some treatments, only about half were giving enough details of the damage and potential side effects.

"Our study shows that people really need to be wary of many YouTube videos about prostate cancer," said urologist Stacy Loeb, who published the findings in "European Urology".
