The discovery of a new game cartridge patent has fueled rumors that Sony might well consider a new PlayStation Portable console rivaling the Nintendo Switch.
Rumors about a potential new PSP began to appear earlier this year after Sony's comments in an annual financial report. The report included a statement in which Sony explained its rationale for staying in the smartphone market, with a focus on 5G technology (with which all mobile devices can be connected to the cloud) as its main goal. According to the statement, Sony "aims to develop 5G technology as a skill that can be used throughout the Sony group."
Sony's new cartridge patent
With the 5G to be used "through the Sony group", Sony's efforts in the field of portable games have naturally focused. If a PSP incorporated 5G technology, Sony would theoretically not have to worry about internal power and processing, but could broadcast leading PS4 games such as God of the war and Red Dead Redemption 2 on the portable device.
So, about this new patent. As TechTastic originally discovered, the new cartridge type looks like today's PS Vita cartridges and could therefore apparently be used in a new theoretical Sony handheld. Exciting, no? Not enough.

Sure, the switch has something revolutionary and may have convinced some Sony members that handhelds are not a stalemate after all, but it's unlikely that this particular patent will hold the key to a new PlayStation Portable.
