A seafood company based in Castletownbere welcomes the signing of a € 500,000 contract with Lidl to supply brown crabs to 800 of its stores in Spain and Portugal.

Shellfish Ireland, which employs around 150 people in Castletownbere, signed the deal because of its relationship with Lidl Ireland. The latter's products will now be shipped from West Cork to depots throughout Spain and Portugal.

The agreement is the result of efforts to open new avenues for Irish suppliers in the seafood sector in Lidl's international markets.

As a result, one of Lidl Spain's buyers, Fernando Clemente, decided to set up full-time at Lidl headquarters in Dublin to negotiate international contracts directly with Irish suppliers. .

Ryan Murphy, of Shellfish Ireland, said the agreement was "a great opportunity" for the company and indicated that the engagement with Mr. Clemente was a key element to guarantee this opportunity.

"Fernando came to see us to see how we do things. So he saw how we catch our crab, we took him in the fishing boat. This is a very rare opportunity to find a buyer and see how you do things it was great, "he said.

Murphy said his family – who has run the business for four generations – was extremely excited about the deal.

The signing of this contract with Lidl represents an excellent opportunity for our fourth-generation family-owned company based in West Cork, Castletownbere.

"The opportunity to export wild crab, or brown crab, from the North-East Atlantic to Lidl stores in Spain and Portugal is extremely exciting for us and will allow us to continue to support the local community, where we are one of the largest employers in the region.

"It's also fantastic to see a big international retailer like Lidl show such trust in Irish companies," he said.
