But this is not for a new handheld
- by Sammy Barker
A patent filed by Sony Interactive Entertainment and released this week suggests that the Japanese giant may be working on a successor of the PlayStation Vita. Despite the documentation describing a new cartridge-like product, it has absolutely nothing to do with a hypothetical handheld – instead, this is a toy named Sony Toio, released to the last year.
Many had believed (hoped?) That the company was actually aligning a successor to its portable line, since the PS Vita should be officially shut down next year. But the patent shows a cartridge identical to that used in the aforementioned product, and is therefore completely independent.
The manufacturer has already admitted that handhelds are "a way to provide gaming experiences" in the past, but the chances of it creating a successor for PS Vita seem slim at this stage, especially when it is backstage on the PlayStation 5. Of course, a new laptop is not impossible if the right circumstances arise – it just seems unlikely at the moment. And this patent is unfortunately not proof of anything.
