A Memphis teenager and five other Mid-South people struggle with hookworms after a trip outside of the state.

During the last days of the trip, and when he returned to Memphis, the teenager's mother – Kelli Dumas – said that he had earaches and was very tired.
Then, bumps began to appear on his right thigh. A few days later, they discovered that they were dealing with a hookworm.
Now the infectious worm has left his body covered with gaping wounds.
"It was an incredible nightmare and it started with joy," says Dumas
A 15-minute trip to Pompano Beach more than a month ago left scars all over the body of l & # 39; teenager. Dumas said that dermatologists have tried to freeze worms.
"When she used liquid nitrogen, he could actually feel the worms moving in his body," said Kelli Dumas.
According to the CDC, the larva can penetrate the skin of humans. The infection is transmitted mainly by walking barefoot on contaminated soil.
The family said that they contacted the Broward County Health Department.
"How many people have been on the beach since June 19th?" Dumas asked. "How many people have been on the beach since I called her on July 17th?" She said when I said "I just want you to put a sign on the beach." "Warning," she said, "It's not my job."
Dumas said his son is home now. He can not even wear shoes and must soak the area in the bleach every day.
"My son intends to go to Ghana next year," Dumas said. "Will I let him go without fear? Not sure, I do not know if I'm going to leave it for the moment."
