The 16 Most Memorable Moments of the Past Late Toy Show of Christmases

The holiday season officially begins only when Ryan Tubridy dons his Christmas sweater and launches some forms at the Late Late Toy Show.

This is the biggest TV show of the year in Ireland. Last year, it attracted an average of 1.35 million viewers and 70% of the public at night. It has become a tradition for families across the country and beyond, after 40 years on the air.

From the opening sequence to toy testing, which sometimes hurts, to performances and surprises, it brings a bit of magic, escape and excitement into our lives at a time when we we need it the most.

These opening sequences

These first two minutes are the happiest of the show and set the bar for what is coming. The introduction on the theme of Little Mermaid last year, with Ryan disguised as lobster Sebastian, and performing with children from the Spotlight Stage School, Spraoi and the Nasty Kidz dance troupe was something special.

And 2016 also deserves a mention. The theme was the jungle book. Ryan was Baloo. The children were, as always, absolutely adorable.

Sergeant Graham Burke is reunited with his family

Last year, three young children – Adam (8), Kayla (6) and Emily (4) – found their soldier father at the end of the Toy Show, after six months of separation.

Sergeant Graham Burke of Midleton, Cork, made his family's dreams come home from a training mission to Mali just in time for the holiday season. The kids did not know that he was there and he surprised them by jumping out of a big box.

By the time they – with Mom Marie – kissed each other, there was not a dry eye across the country.

Graham, a native of Dublin, said: "I'm shaking, it's amazing to see them, it's just unreal."

Junior Choir of the Deaf of the Holy Family

True Colors played by the choir of the deaf junior of the Holy Family (based in Cabra, Dublin) was one of the highlights of the show's musical play last year. Beautiful and very, very moving. Barry Murphy of Dundalk, Alisha Weir of Knocklyon in Dublin and Eimhear Greene (harpist) of Kilkee Co Clare also performed.

Mia's surprise

Little Mia, of Bluebell in Dublin, told Ryan that she was currently living with her aunt, cousin, nanny, grandfather, mother and mother in a busy house. She told Ryan that it was because "I think my mother can not have a house." Ryan surprised Mia on a trip for his entire family to Legoland Florida. His face said everything.
