The creator of SpongeBob SquarePants dies at the age of 57

Stephen Hillenburg, creator of SpongeBob SquarePants, died at the age of 57 following a motor neuron disease.

The Nickelodeon children's television channel said in a statement: "We are sad to share the announcement of the death of Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of SpongeBob SquarePants.

"Today we are observing a moment of silence to pay tribute to his life and work."

Hillenburg announced that he had been diagnosed with degenerative disease in March 2017.

He designed, wrote, produced and directed the animated series that began in 1999 and won numerous awards, produced a series of derivative books, two Hollywood films and a Broadway musical.

Hillenburg was a professor of marine biology in southern California when he started creating marine creatures as educational tools.

"Steve has entrusted SpongeBob SquarePants with a unique sense of humor and innocence that has brought joy to generations of children and families around the world," the statement added.

"His completely original characters and the world of Bikini Bottom will long remember the value of optimism, friendship and the unlimited power of the imagination.

"He was a beloved friend and long-time creative partner for everyone at Nickelodeon, and our heart goes out to all his family."
