The obsession of Hill House creator Mike Flanagan has responded to the theories of fans about the end of the season.

In response to fans who think maybe Steve, Shirley, Theo and Luke have not had such a happy ending (-ish), said Flanagan. TVLine: "I've talked a lot about the end, and I'm reluctant to say more.

"I like that people are able to give their opinion, so I'm not in a hurry to talk to them about it.

"In this case, however, the end can be read at face value."

He continued: "If they're still in the red room, it deprives Hugh's sacrifice (and the show itself) of any meaning, for me it ends exactly as it seems."

Earlier this week, Flanagan revealed that he was considering ending The obsession of Hill House on a cliffhanger – which, one might agree, would have been infuriating.

He said TVLine: "It did not look like anything I wanted in the world, so we quickly abandoned it.

"It was part of the very first conversations we had about it, but it never really took a form I would like to talk about."

The obsession of Hill House is now available on Netflix.
