The former wife of rock star Brian Ferry committed suicide with a shot, his investigation said yesterday.

It was said at the hearing that Lucy Birley, married to the Roxy Music star in 1982, left notes and shotgun shells at her brother, Mark Helmore, at B & B in New Quay, in County Clare.

Coroner Isobel O'Dea delivered a suicide verdict after hearing evidence that the 58-year-old mother, 58, died of a self-inflicted injury in July.

The old model and the heiress company and the singer Love Is The Drug divorced in 2003.

They had four sons together, Otis, Isaac, Tara and Merlin. She remarried in 2006.

Ms. O'Dea told Ennis Coroner's Court: "I'm glad Lucy committed suicide."

Gda Cathy Burke testified when she went to Ms. Birley's room and found a shotgun, cartridges and several notes.

Caroline McNamara told the court that she had found the body wrapped in a comforter on the bedroom floor around 23:50 on 23 July.

She called Mrs. Birley, who lived in Shropshire, England, but she did not answer.

Ms. McNamara said that she called Mr. Helmore, who was on vacation at the time, who then called his long-time friend, Douglas Culligan, to ask him to come home.

Mr. Culligan said, "Mark said he thought Lucy had committed suicide."

Upon entering Ms. Birley's room, Mr. Culligan stated that he saw feet under a comforter.

He added, "I put the back of my hand on the sole of his foot and it was very cold. I raised the top of the quilt and saw blood on the pillow and barrel of a shotgun.

Mr. Culligan was on the phone with an operator at that time and he said, "I dropped the quilt and the operator asked me if she was cold and I could not do it. I answered "Stone Cold".

Mr. Culligan then phoned Mr. Helmore to say, "I'm sorry for telling you, but you were right. Mark said, "I thought so."

He identified Ms. Birley's body in a local Garda at 24:05 on July 24th.

Mr. Helmore was present at the investigation and, before reading the medical evidence of Ms. Birley's injuries in the post-mortem report, Ms. O'Dea told her, "I do not really want to read everything. "

Mr. Helmore said, "I do not want it either, but I have to listen."

Ms. O'Dea stated that the medical evidence showed that Mrs. Birley had very little alcohol in her system and a therapeutic level of antidepressants.
