One woman told a court that she had seen red and that her "maternal instinct" had manifested when three gardaís had tried to arrest her son.
Mary Finnegan (63) attempted to interfere with her son's arrest and kicked a garda, touched another on the wrist and shin and hit a third officer in the back of the head in the early hours of August 6th.
The mother of two reported taking prescribed sleeping pills, going out at night and drinking only one drink, which caused her to react as she did.
She worked all her life but retired three years ago. She is "very embarrbaded" and "can not believe". She behaved this way, said the Balbriggan District Court.
The accused, from St. Catherine's Park in Rush, in North County Dublin, pleaded guilty to badaulting Garda Arron Shanahan, Garda Aidan O 'Halloran and Garda Kevin Fitzpatrick on August 26 last at Upper Main Street in Rush. She has no previous convictions.
Sergeant Eoin McDonnell testified that Gardaí went to the main street around 2 am in an attempt to arrest the son of the accused.
"The defendant then interfered with the arrest of his son and badaulted three guards," Sgt McDonnell said.
"She kicked one garda, hit another on her wrist and shin and hit a third on the back of her head."
He added that the three guards "were not seriously injured" and were able to resume their duties shortly thereafter.
Defense lawyer Fiona D'Arcy said her client, who has two sons aged 35 and 32, is "very embarrbaded".
"She prepared three letters of apology for custody that were given to the sergeant," she added.
Ms. D Arcy stated that the defendant had gone out at night to socialize, but that he was taking prescribed sleeping pills and that he "had only drunk a glbad".
"Because of his son's behavior, he was arrested, she saw red and her maternal instinct came into play," said Ms. Arcy.
The defendant "worked all her life and retired at 60," she added.
"She could not believe her behavior, she is normally a peaceful citizen and her retirement has been destroyed for 15 months."
Judge Paula Murphy warned the defendant that the offenses "resulted in a death sentence of 12 months" and ordered a probation report before sentencing before returning the case to next year.
