A transatlantic flight was rerouted at Shannon Airport after a woman allegedly suffered contractions.
British Airways flight BA-292 then traveled from Washington to the United States to London Heathrow Airport.
The Boeing 787-900 was about 50 km south of Ireland when the crew informed the air traffic controllers that they had a "medical situation" on board and that it might be necessary to head for Shannon.
A short time later, after the crew had badessed the situation, the pilot declared a "Pan" medical emergency and asked for permission to turn around and head for Shannon.
The crew confirmed that there was a pregnant woman on board who seemed to be having contractions.
The flight landed safely at 10:05 am and was greeted by airport staff and paramedics from the National Ambulance Service who quickly boarded the aircraft. The woman was taken to Limerick Hospital for treatment.
A spokesman for British Airways confirmed: "The flight was diverted to Shannon as a precaution for a minor medical reason. The plan is for the flight to continue to Heathrow. "
Meanwhile, an aircraft was forced to abort its landing at Dublin Airport due to wind conditions. He also went to Shannon this morning.
The WW-6 flight from Wow Air, connecting Reykjavik, Iceland to Dublin, turned around after being subjected to wind shear. The crew had hoped to attempt a second landing but had decided to turn away from Shannon.
The flight landed at Shannon at 10:19 am, where he was refueled for his return to Dublin when conditions improved.
The WW-6 flight from Wow Air returned to Dublin at 11:54 while British Airways flight 292 continued to London at 12:35.
