HSE urged those most at risk to be vaccinated.
Dr. Kevin Kelleher, Health Protection Officer at HSE, said two to four people died of the H1N1 flu virus, better known as swine flu, this season.
Addressing the Irish Independent, Kelleher said the HSE was concerned that the flu season has not even fully begun:
"I can see from the data I have that it is starting to increase, that it will almost certainly exceed the threshold we set, namely that it is the flu season.
"The flu season lasts 12 to 18 weeks, and last year it was 17 weeks, which was really very long."
Those most at risk of contracting the virus include people aged 65 and over, pregnant women and people with chronic diseases.
The HSE has already published an official Under The Weather website, and Kelleher added that while most people cure flu symptoms themselves, anyone concerned about their condition should call their doctor or a medical service. outside normal hours:
"People with symptoms should stay home and children should not go to school if they have signs of flu."
