Here is the horrible moment when a car pursued by Gardai lost control of his vehicle, collided with another vehicle and tragically killed the man inside.
The incident occurred late Tuesday night around 11:30 pm, when a vehicle chased by Gardai collided with a Skoda Octavia, in Main Street, Castleblaney, in Monaghan County.
The occupant of the Skoda, an innocent man in his forties, was declared dead on the scene.
Minutes before the incident, Gardai had attempted to stop a silver Audi near Castleblaney Garda station.
A Garda who had attempted to stop the Audi had been dragged for about 500 meters before colliding with the Skoda Octavia.
Images have now appeared showing an Audi colliding with the Skoda, then rolling on the road with smoke coming from inside.
In a statement released shortly after the incident, a Garda spokeswoman said: "Gardaí is investigating a fatal road crash involving two cars at Main Street, Castleblaney, Monaghan County, November 27, 2018 at 11:30 pm .
"Shortly before the accident, Garda had attempted to stop an Audi A6 money near the station Castleblaney Garda.
"This car started and the Garda was dragged by the car for about 500m before hitting another car, a Skoda Octavia, on Main Street.
"The Garda, a man in his twenties, is being treated for injuries to the face, head and leg at the Notre Dame de Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.
"The driver of the Skoda, a man in his forties, was declared dead on the scene.
"His body was transported to the hospital Notre-Dame de Lourdes de Drogheda where a post mortem examination will be carried out by the state pathologist.
"The driver of the silver Audi, a man in his forties, was arrested at the scene and detained at Carrickmacross Garda station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
"Main Street is closed for investigators, forensic investigators, and Garda crime scene investigators to conduct a review of the area." Local deviations are in place.
"All witnesses are kindly requested to contact the Carrickmacross Garda station at 042 9690190."
Gardai has since referred the incident to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) for investigation.
In a statement, a spokesman said: "Following the fatal collision last night in Castlebalaney, Gardaí has referred to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission under Section 102 of the 2005 Law on Garda Síochána, which provides for the opening of an independent investigation into any case that the conduct of a member of the Garda Síochána could have resulted in the death of a person or cause serious harm to that person.
"The GSOC has deployed a team of investigators to the scene and the incident review is continuing."
