WHO assigns measles to misinformation

Measles cases worldwide jumped by more than 30% last year compared to 2016, according to the World Health Organization.

Increases have been recorded in wealthy European countries like Germany, where immunization coverage has always been high, the UN body said.

The WHO said the alarming trend of measles cases to resurgence was a near-global phenomenon, but that causes varied from one region to another.

In Europe, the problem has been attributed in part to complacency and misinformation about a vaccine that has proven to be both safe and effective.

In Latin America, the number of cases has risen sharply due to the collapse of the health system in Venezuela, experts said.

Martin Friede, director of immunization, vaccines and biologics at the WHO, said that "alleged experts accusing the vaccine without any evidence" have had an impact on parents' decisions.
