New step towards 5G in Italy. Vodafone, in fact, has announced that it has first made a 3GPP compliant connection in Italy, the standard approved last December by the mobile communications system standardization body. Specifically, the operator has established a 5G data connection using the 3.7-3.8 GHz frequencies made available by Mise. This test, in fact, is part of the experimental plan promoted by the Ministry of Economic Development in Milan and the metropolitan area
The data connection was made through the network infrastructure and devices from Huawei already compatible with the new 5G 3GPP standard. Thanks to this important result, Vodafone is taking an important step in its 5G test plan. Plan involving 28 partners and 10 endorsers to carry out 41 projects in different sectors. In this project, Vodafone will invest 90 million euros. The goal is to cover 80% of the Milan area with the 5G by 2018, reaching 100% by 2019. Last October, the operator, also in Milan, had achieved the first data connection "pre 3GPP" reaching the goal of maximum download speed of 2.7 Gbps with very low latencies in the order of the millisecond.
The standard that adopted Vodafone for this data connection is called 5G New Radio Non-Standalone (NSA) and is the first real brick for the commercial launch of 5G. The first commercial services based on this new standard are expected to start in some countries as early as 2019.
Last June, however, 3GPP approved the 5G standard "standalone" which closes the development work of this new standard.
