The man was detained at the San Jose International Airport while he was preparing to take the plane to China on July 7 (although the news came out yesterday ). Zhang was a hardware engineer for the autonomous driving department of Apple and as such had access to confidential information of the company. But it would have started to become suspicious after noticing his abnormal network activity shortly before his resignation. Zhang admitted to the FBI that he had downloaded files on Apple's unmanned driver technology on his wife's laptop to continue to have access to it. In 2015, Apple approved a project to build an autonomous electric car that would compete with Tesla, Uber and Waymo (Google). However, two years ago, the project was scaled down, with a focus on software development and sensors.
